- Keep contact details clear on digital and print based materials.
- Keep blog updated/social media (if you have one) as this is a good way for others to see what you're up to.
- Send out A6 or A5 mailers to potential employers - follow up with an email after a week or two. OR if emailing straight away, attach a PDF that's less than 1MB.
Finance/Book keeping:
- Register for income tax within 3 months.
- Make sure to keep up to date with accounts.
- Keep all receipts and physical copy of all paperwork for every job.
Copyright:
- Does not require registration or a symbol to exist.
- The right to copy is not affected by what you do with the original piece.
- Reference fee - being paid when your work is used as reference.
- Assigning copyright to a client should cost a lot but should only be applicable to logos.
- Licencing means that a client will pay for the actual use of the imagery.
- Right of paternity - the right to be recognised as the creator.
- Right of integrity - artwork must not be edited etc.
Pricing work:
- Know your client - larger budget for larger clients.
- Usage - cover, spread, full page, half page?
- Territory - UK, Worldwide?
- Duration - print run/edition, period of copyright?
